On June 13th, Ola Stensson from Arkatay gave our members an insight into the changes in the new PMBOK®, 6th edition. That was governed by the following agenda:

- PMBOK® Guide, background

- Changes, 5th to 6th edition of PMBOK® Guide

- Agile Practice Guide

- Wrap up

First things first, as Ole stated, it is all about business value delivered through projects under the guidance of strategy. Project execution can be crucial; however, it is strategy and business analysis that dominates.

PMI has been striving to guide Project Mangers with an updated body of knowledge every 4 years. The key changes in the 6th edition are:

Each Knowledge Area has been standardized and divided into:

  • Key Concepts
  • Trends and Emerging Practices
  • Tailoring Considerations
  • Considerations for Agile/Adaptive Environments

The below matrix draws attention to the changes (in red).

Furthermore, PMBOK® addresses the role of the Project Manager from the perspective of influence, competencies and integration, as below.

Finally, Agile. Historically, PMI has been associated with the waterfall approach to project management. Nevertheless, the latest edition of the PMBOK®, has included Agile Practice Guide.

Agile has spurred a vibrant discussion among the participants around its actual application. Some have strongly advocated for the benefits thereof and others, have had difficulties with imagining how it can be even tailored to their projects.

It seems evident that only some types of projects, especially IT, may ripe the full benefits of being executed Agile, whereas other project, e.g. within construction, may only include some parts of Agile, staying waterfall. Again, the scope determines the execution method. Only by understanding the nature and constraints of our projects, would allow us to execute them in the most optimized way.

Great thanks to all the participants, thought provoking discussions and to Ola Stensson, for shedding light on the updates from PMI.
