On May 20th we had the opportunity to get an introduction to the DICE® framework, a model developed by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). A DICE ® score is a leading indicator of the likely success of a project based on objective measures. The DICE ® framework allows for consistency in evaluating various projects (even though the inputs are subjective) and the framework can be used to track projects, manage portfolios of projects, and force the right conversations. This seminar presented the DICE® model and its application to a recently completed change initiative in the speakers organisation. The event took place at Nordea in the Christiansbro offices where we were kindly provided with sandwiches and beberages sponsored by Nordea.

DICE 2The event started by an introduction to the DICE® framework and the tool available at the BCG website, DICE® tool.The DICE ® frameworkis a tool originally developed by Perry Keenan, Kathleen Conlon, and Alan Jackson (all current or former Partners at The Boston Consulting Group). It was originally published in the Harvard Business Review (HBR) article "The Hard Side of Change" in 2005 and has been republished in HBR's "Lead Change--Successfully", HBR's OnPoint Magazineand recognized in HBR's "10 Must Reads on Change Management" publication. The DICE ® framework was awarded a patent in 2014.

The power in the DICE ® framework is that it initiates a real two-way conversation at multiple levels of an organization. With enormous pressure on employees' time, this simple tool provides an efficient way to target potential issues before they cause a project to go off-course.Using this framework, leaders can predict and manipulate project outcomes and allocate resources strategically to maximize delivery of an overall program or portfolio of initiatives.

 Jan presented the model for calculation the DICE® scores which is baced on the four factors of the DICE® framework:



–Commitment (C1 and C2)


Jan used an internal Tetra Pak project to show how each factor may be calculated. The project was a global change initiative to implement a standardised governance framework with a broad scope and impacting thousands of users. Jan provided input for each parameter and the audience was encouraged to discuss a certain aspect of each score which triggered interesting conversations between Jan and the audience.

Based on the values assiged to each score the DICE tool will allow to calculate the Overall Score and present the results in the DICE chart together with a recommendation.


The event concluded with a review of learnings based on the DICE® model and captured by Tetra Pak during the usage of the model in their project portfolio.

  • Ensure commitment from senior managers not only once but over and over again
  • Prioritise hard among initiatives to avoid overload in receiving organisations
  • If possible have an evolutionary implementation approach rather than big bang
  • Secure there are local drivers available that can drive the local deployment
  • Remember the last step of the Kotter model to maintain the gains
