Building sustainability targets into project management artefacts

Sustainability ambitions are increasingly becoming an integrated part of corporate strategies and performance indicators. A range of societal trends and objectives is driving this development including:

  • An increased demand from customers for climate-conscious solutions
  • Access to favorable financing increasingly being dependent on companies' sustainability profile
  • Business opportunities within the growing area of sustainability, estimated at USD 24-36 trillion a year
  • The need to proactively approach climate-related legislation that represents both substantial risk and business opportunities
  • A growing preference among talents for working in companies with clear sustainability ambitions

The transformation of business strategies and ethos has however yet to materialize in project delivery models that, at large, represent single bottom line and short-term thinking that is ill-suited to handle the requirements of today's business environment.

This leaves an urgent need for ensuring that projects are better designed to cater for sustainability thinking and underpin long-term business objectives. Doing so requires the deliberate integration of sustainability into the very engine room of organizations to connect strategies with day-to-day practices.

The presentation will provide an approach to do this supported by case studies.
