The talk:
Projects are getting increasingly complex. Integrated functionality and mutual interdependency make collaboration and openness between project partners, governmental bodies and other institutions a necessary condition for mega projects to provide adaptive innovations and unconventional solutions that our society requires.
Professor Alfons van Marrewijk will talk about his studies on collaboration practices between the six largest critical infrastructure providers in the Netherlands, highlighting examples of integrated design in which network operators jointly come to innovative solutions. The practices include the visualization of invisible interdependencies and the dilemmas between a push to share data for the increased integration of roads, railways, airports, harbours, electricity and water networks, and the advantages of closure, including security, ownership and competitiveness. Alfons proposes the practice of enclosing data sharing – a mode of organizing that is neither completely open nor closed, and suggests data sharing as gift-giving or a reciprocal means of exchange between organizational actors who wish to build and maintain collaborative relationships.
